A nebula, also known as a nebula, is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and ionised gases. Originally, nebula was the name for any diffuse celestial body, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The Andromeda Galaxy, for example, was attributed as the Andromeda Nebula (and spiral galaxies in general as "spiral nebulae") before the true nature of galaxies was confirmed in the early 20th century by Vesto Melvin Slipher, Edwin Hubble and others. Most nebulae are vast in size, spanning sizes up to hundreds of light-years in diameter. Although denser than the space that surrounds them, most nebulae are far less dense than any vacuum created in an Earth environment - an Earth-sized nebular cloud would weigh only a few kilograms.
