As if by stubbornness and in an exercise of not losing figuration in drawing, a few months ago, José Augusto Castro decided to leave a small sketchpad on the kitchen counter and quickly register what he saw every day. The pads multiplied and, at some point, those figurations gathered lines and details which, in the deconstruction of reality that takes us (sometimes) to abstraction and purity of the experience of matter, were used as the subject for the creation of a series of black and white drawings (many of them with collage) where figuration and abstraction merge in the illusion of a simple plasticity which connects us immediately to José Augusto Castro’s identity. DRAWINGS OF NOWHERE is thus a catharsis of the unpretentious and automatic daily exercise of observation and record, which stimulated the interest in shape poetry of the inhabited space and in its possibilities to create new drawings. We group them by cadence and exhibit them as encrypted narrative suggestions.
