This complete series of artworks stems from a visit to Shaoguan in the Guangdong Province of Southern China. The series depicts an almost continuous section of the length of wall adjoining land farmed by the local peasantry at the edge of the original older village part of the community. The intense blue coloured wall had inscribed upon it a number of political slogans to reinforce the indoctrination of the peasants who live there and cultivate the fields which the wall adjoins. The wall also had modern graffiti added which has been removed but leaving a ghostly outline of the characters. To me the wall is symbolic of the suppression of the peasantry by and during the Cultural Revolution. Later I discovered that Shaoguan had been an important hub of the Mao Ze Dong's revolution and that there still exists there a shrine to the communist teachings of Mao and the revolution called the "Nostalgic Book Room". Also there had been some unpleasant incidents between differing ethnic elements in the area. The whole set of images comprise a total of 13 portraying different sections of the wall and in varying states of decay. The decay represents to me the decay of the quality of life and freedom that the local people endured under the revolution.
