AMAR O MINHO | Programa de Residências Artísticas

AMAR O MINHO is an artistic residency program promoted by the MINHO IN consortium (consisting of the Alto Minho, Ave, and Cávado Inter-municipal Communities), which includes the 24 municipalities of Minho, with the aim of promoting the Minho brand from a cultural and touristic point of view. Zet gallery is responsible for the artistic coordination and communication of the program, with project curators Helena Mendes Pereira and António Rafael. The program, which runs from June 2020 to December 2021, promotes artistic residencies from different areas, which include art in public space, handicrafts, photography, music, dance, and literature.

André Henriques, the lead singer of Linda Martini, produced a musical piece inspired by the literary work Os Carecas de Ponte de Lima, by António Feijó, representative of the cultural heritage of the territory. It is surely one of the best-known works in the municipality. This story appeared almost as a fable, something that brought great commotion at the time since it generated a huge polemic in Ponte de Lima at the end of the 19th century. There is almost a parallel with the wave of fake news we are going through today. As there was no Internet at the time the story is set, it was through physical means and paper newspapers that the fake news took shape. Also called Os Carecas de Faldejães, António Feijó’s work was at the time a great novel, a great mystery that even today, throughout the years, people have tried to replicate and make profitable.

Amares pays tribute, and makes present in everyone’s memory, through an ambitious painting on a mural by Juan Domingues, three personalities of its History: Gualdim Pais (1118-1195), Portuguese crusader, Knight Templar (founder of the city of Tomar) and Knight of D. Afonso Henriques; Sá de Miranda (1481-1558), Renaissance poet and he person who introduced the sonnet and the Dolce Stil Nuovo in the Portuguese language; and António Variações (1944-1984), singer and composer who marked, above all, the 1980s and whose music continues to influence new generations of musicians. Through the superimposition of plans, which symbolise the complexity of these three men, Juan Domingues combines the mastery of his drawing with the sensitivity with which he works with colour. This imposing work is installed in an urban context and brings with it the spectacularity of pure painting aggregated to the strength of the message that each represented carries.

Filipa Martins, writer and screenwriter, wrote a poetic monologue entitled Cunhar Amor, inspired by the main identity elements of the Terras de Bouro region.
After close contact with the people from Terras de Bouro, Filipa Martins wrote an allegory about the perseverance of those who make this land their home and their livelihood. One of the great marks of the region that the text addresses is the great devotion around the image of São Bento, exploring the more mythological dimension and be- lief that exists around this saint figure. It also explores the type of stories that pilgrims carry, the type of requests they make and the type of promises, the letters they leave. Although it is a fictional text, it is also a truthful text because it tries to respect the history of Terras de Bouro. The poetic monologue was presented on June 18th, 2021, to two 9th grade classes of the Elementary and Secondary School of Terras de Bouro. The text should be understood as a provocation in the sense that words build futures. The text is read in the voice of the actor Pedro Lamares.

Sound essay by Martim Sousa Tavares in collaboration with students from the Music Academy of Fortaleza de Valença and the Superior Conservatory / Music School of Tui. We often try to see what we can hear. This work is an interpretation of Valença through its landscapes and sound situations. The sounds that this place offers, the sounds that we produce in it, the sounds that characterise it and the sounds that, being able to occur anywhere in the world, were heard here. If we are, we sound. The equation, of Cartesian logic, implies that our existence is also guided by our sounds, which characterise us and reveal us in the smallest de- tails. Thus, if I am, I sound. Just as listening to the world means listening to a world, this installation proposes an encounter with one, among infinite ways of listening to Valença.

Intervening on the banks of the river connects with some references to the history of gold. Filigree makes us think of fire, the casting of gold or silver; of the passage and channels of a raw noble material that is melted to become liquid and then solid; worked until it reaches the thickness of thread, a matter that has been previously sifted, filtered. We are, conceptually, in the connection to nature and alchemy; to its magical, primordial senses, between the seed and bud. Unlike the first element, which is more connected with the raw matter in power, the second element opens up to the light, in a form that resembles a bud, a plant that is developing, which is sculpted through constructive modes that resemble those of the professionals. The artist started from the idea of a reliquary path, a form that evokes a cycle, drawing a movement with the relationship between the parts of the work. However, it has frozen the image of budding, of the bud opening on fertile ground to the light. The sculptural installation, consisting of two elements, in which corten steel, stainless steel, cunifer and iron are used. It was designed specifically for this park.

Henrique Silva was born in Paredes in 1933. In the paths of his multiple lives, he found Vila Nova de Cerveira, being part of the History of the International Art Biennials since 1978. He is a founding partner of the Foundation Art Biennial of Cerveira and directed the 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2015 editions of the event, remaining an active voice in the construction of a project always directed towards the future. Visual artist, his production soon went beyond the realms of painting, expanding into drawing, objects, and video. His career as a professor of higher education in the field of arts is also noteworthy. An essential name on the national artistic scene, the master was deserving of this tribute. Juan Domingues sought to portray him in the diversity of moments in his life, capturing his sincere and restless gaze and an eternal inability to resign. He lives in Gondar, Vila Nova de Cerveira, where he maintains a studio.

António Pedro was born in Praia, Cape Verde, on December 9th, 1909 and ended his days in Moledo, Caminha, Portugal, on August 17th, 1966. 55 years after his disappearance, the Municipality of Caminha pays tribute to this enormous personality of theatre, literature, arts, and culture, in general, one of those who was part of the first generation of Portuguese surrealists. For the António Pedro Auditorium, sculptor Pedro Figueiredo developed a bronze sculpture set, consisting of two elements: the woman is inspired by the oil on canvas “Ilha do Cão”, which António Pedro painted in 1941 and which is based on the landscape reference of this place and, in particular, of the Ínsua. The cherub, the second sculptural element, tops the supporting wall, observing the scene and bringing idyllic surrealism to Pedro Figueiredo’s proposal, whose artistic vocabulary is perfectly recognisable in this work.

Miguel Pereira, the Portuguese choreographer and dancer, was in artistic residence at zet gallery, in Braga, working on a theatre-dance piece in collaboration with students from the Theatre Course of the University of Minho. The artistic residence addressed the theme of spirituality, which is considered the great identity mark that defines the region and particularly the city of Braga, creating a parallel with the work of W. Goethe, based on an analysis made by the French philosopher Pierre Hadot in the book N’Oublie Pas De Vivre, in which he reflects on the spirituality linked to the work of the German writer in his connection with Time and Nature. The artist proposed to think about and explore what would be a performative action anchored in these principles and that would refer to an idea of transcendence and the sublime in such dark and unpredictable times as the ones we live in. The group was challenged to create a small film piece developed in the black box space at the zet gallery, with the collaboration of musician Rafael Machado and film director Patrick Esteves, extending and transporting the intrinsic logics of the spectacle to a more cinematographic dimension.

Sofia Saldanha produced an audio-guided piece based on the novel A Casa Grande de Romarigães, by Aquilino Ribeiro. In the first phase of the project, stories were identified and registered that are interconnected with the themes explored by Aquilino Ribeiro in his novel chronicle. With Aquilino, we will travel through the past and the present of this region to build an audio-guided journey that includes a series of sound narratives each one dedicated to a theme. This project aims to give visibility to oral memory, as a fundamental part of our cultural heritage, starting from the individual to build collective memory and national identity. It also aims to disseminate the work of Aquilino Ribeiro. In this novel sound documentary, we start with Aquilino Ribeiro’s Casa Grande de Romarigães to talk about houses, the big ones and the small ones, and to tell what it was like to live in a village in Alto Minho in the middle of the 20th century. After all, what are these places we call home?

Miguel Pereira, Portuguese choreographer and dancer, was in artistic residence at the House of Culture in Ponte da Barca where he developed a dance-theatre piece in collaboration with dancers from a local dance school. The artist shared his practice and his creation and composition processes with dance and theatre students, reflecting on what could make up an identity mark in the area of dance and performing arts, looking at what defines a region as diverse and rich as Minho. During the artistic residence in Ponte da Barca, the artist developed with the students at a school where they practice ballet classes, other approaches beyond that specific technique, resorting to a transformation of the imaginary that contemporary dance can introduce in the vocabulary of movement and individual expression, using other languages that the students themselves, for example, share in their daily lives, such as urban dances or even folklore. Simultaneously, the artist proposed to explore and experiment with the concept of a “free” dance, composed and multiple, envisaging what could be a new language that would translate a new look at the discipline of dance and its referents.

In the town of Vieira do Minho, the artistic residence of Diogo Costa, a Portuguese conductor, had as its main objective the gathering of the two Philharmonic Bands of the municipality for a concert that aimed to give these musicians a new philharmonic experience. Traditionally, our country’s philharmonic bands play symphonic repertoire, which includes the great works of music history, but also traditional music, usually rhapsodic fantasies, written by Portuguese composers and conductors based on traditional Portuguese themes. This was the major focus of the artistic residence in Vieira do Minho. For this purpose, Diogo Costa wrote a series of new works based on the traditional music of Minho and, in this case, traditional music from this region in particular. The work Amar o Ave was premiered in the concert that ended this artistic residence, on May 8th, 2022, and the general score was given by the conductor to the President of the Municipality, António Cardoso Barbosa. This collaboration with the two Vieira do Minho’s Philharmonic Bands results from the creation of new arrangements and the composition of an original song, “Amar o Ave”, which will become part of the municipality’s estate. The scores of both pieces were acquired on behalf of the municipality to be played by both bands.

Mão Morta were in artistic residence in Soajo, in Arcos de Valdevez, working on the creation of a musical piece in collaboration with the Cantadeiras do Soajo. The importance of emigration, the legends about the brides in love with the Moors, the longing that emigration always brings, the strength of nature of the National Park Peneda Gerês, the Lima River, the Paço de Giela, the importance of brides in the social life of Minho, are heritage elements that are poured here. The musical composition was also developed from the contact with the cantadeiras, with other collections made in the Alto Minho region, which were added to what are the most usual compositions of Mão Morta Redux. Inclusively, there is the recourse to sound treatment of one of the pieces, which, after recording the voices, generated sound processing with adulteration of the chorus, although it is still understood that the source is traditional. It was understood that this was the aim of the developed work. To unite the difference and reinterpret local heritage elements.
