This painting is homage to a very delicious street food meal which is common in Israel, and is called Sabih. Its origin is in Iraq, where the Jews ate it in the morning- ‘sabah’ in Arabic. It consists of fried eggplant, boiled egg and Tahini sauce inside of a Pita bread. The Hebrew letters on the paperbag mention the name of a specific Sabih place in Tel-Aviv, which has a great ambience and quality. I wanted to paint an unimportant and temporal thing, street food, in the most honorable way, using material layers of oil painting. In a way the theme of this painting is inspired by the Pop Art movement. The process of painting was between fast and slow. On the one hand, I used different layers of oil painting in order to give importance to the food itself. On the other hand, I painted in a ‘light’ way, without wasting a long time on unimportant details, trying to show how fun was the process of painting, and the experience of eating this food itself.
