Andrew Curtis’ editions for PayneShurvell have been screen printed with pigment made from ground Whitby Jet. In a digital age Curtis makes hand produced photo works which explore the colonial history of Britain through its visual and physical landscape. Whitby Jet is a fossil of the Jurassic Araucana tree and was made fashionable by Queen Victoria when she used Jet as her mourning jewelry for Prince Albert in 1861. The Araucaria Araucana, or monkey Puzzle tree, was imported from South America in the nineteenth century and planted as a symbol of worldly status. It is depicted by Curtis in its adopted habitat, British suburbia.
