Having empathy as a starting point, Lígia Fernandes uses drawing and painting as tools to explore cultural universes, ethnographies, collective memories, and identities. After a process of collecting photographs from family albums, texts, interviews from different people around Portugal, Lígia develops works on paper which aim to connect with the collective memory, perhaps trying to rescue it from oblivion, and bringing intimacy back between the observer and the anonymous characters which inhabit the paintings.
Lígia Fernandes (1985, Setúbal) holds a Master degree in Painting at FBAUL, after studying Drawing at the same faculty. After several years of professional experience in economics, she has been dedicated to drawing and painting since 2014, having participated in several exhibitions, residencies, and exchange programs (Portugal, Montenegro, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia). She also co-founded several collectives and socially engaged projects.
