The paper is sanded before being painted and blocks the formation of a precise image, giving the paintings a physical ‘beaten’ quality. There is a symbiosis between the scratches and the ink, creating spontaneous forms that look like an organism, such as mould, growing. Subtle natural colours intensify the link to nature, and emphasise the crossover between humans and the organic. A sense of the ephemeral and a feeling of an absent presence is evoked.
