Braga em Obras

BeO Braga em Obras, an inventory, cataloguing and signage project of artworks in public space in the municipality of Braga, referring to the 20th and 21st centuries.
Within the scope of the protocol signed between the EDP Foundation and Braga City Council, the ENERGIZARTE project took place, which brought to the banks of the Cávado River several interventions, framed in urban art.
The artists' purpose was to create an image that was easily identifiable by the local community. In this sense, without evoking any specific tradition or representative element, the main idea was to create a composition with elements of local fauna and flora, appealing to the balance and well-being existing in the relationship with nature.

In this work, the artist tries to reinforce the fact that, for many years, this place was the most important in the Cávado river crossing, trying to reveal that, nowadays, that spirit endures with the frenzy of the industrial park.

Within the scope of the protocol signed between the EDP Foundation and Braga City Council, the ENERGIZARTE project took place, which brought to the banks of the Cávado River several interventions, framed in urban art. For this intervention, the students of the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado were also challenged to be the protagonists.
In this work, a long canoe is represented, led by Mágio Merelim, and on board follow some iconic figures of this parish, identifiable for several generations. Stories of guerrilla warfare between farmers for access to the river, encounters between traditional music and rock or the discoveries of the local scout group are some of the narratives told in the composition.

The work is part of the series of "patterns”, transversal to the production and thought” that this artist puts into his works for public space, evoking the symbolism of the patterns that, in the period of the Discoveries, the Portuguese placed overseas to mark the conquest of a new territory. It is his way of leaving a mark and of showing his nature as a travelling artist. Volker Schnüttgen has developed a long collaboration with the dstgroup and conceived this sculptural set, in granite - an endogenous resource common in his work and which he explores in industrial and factory contexts - symbolising the steps, sometimes slow and with setbacks, necessary for success. The work shows his technical mastery of the material and, at the same time, his poetic side.

The work was developed in the scope of the Symposium Art & Sustainability, promoted by dstgroup and zet gallery, which had the purpose of inviting artists to create artworks from industrial waste available at the dstgroup campus. Hernâni Reis Baptista gave new life to a stone drill which, in a kind of large plinth made of polychrome concrete, is restored to the dignity of a sculpture suggesting a human form. The artist likes to explore industrial objects with which he can draw parallels to the human body itself. The work weighs close to four tons and is still a compliment to all the workers who put it to use.

The vault buried on a concrete block suggests a fall, a literal fall of the volume and a fall of what it represents. The safe appears rescued from the demolition of the space where it was also kept - a second protection. It is also fireproof, just like the plaque that describes it. It is a metaphor for the fall of power, be it of capital or strength. What he kept or keeps now will remain permanently closed, encased in concrete.

The work was developed in the scope of the Symposium Art & Sustainability, promoted by dstgroup and zet gallery, which had the purpose of inviting artists to create artworks from industrial waste available at the dstgroup campus. The artist started with a safe from the demolition of a building, which she transformed with the leaf of another, placing inside a treasure, a glass piece of her own, in the shape of a heart. The safe is followed by its placement inside a container, no longer used in a work context, where a labyrinth with glass walls is created, in which we are led by sound impulses. The work explores the assumption of the heart as the sacred place we call home.

Using waste from various metal profiles and boxes, the artist created a structure, designed to be suspended between two trees, which symbolises nature's eternal victory over man and its capacity to withstand everything.

João Carqueijeiro is one of the biggest names in ceramics in Portugal, and his work is characterised by removing the use of ceramics from the strictly artisanal and integrating it as an artistic practice. In this work, in which a metallic structure known as "malha sol" is reused, the group formed by Ana Riobom, Arménia Vasconcelos, Arminda Garrido, Cecília Côrte-Real, Edgar Moreira, Eduarda Coquet, Fátima Figueiras collaborated, Fernanda Figueiredo, Inês Almeida, Isabel Bonifácio, Isabel Sousa Ribeiro, Luís Colares, Manuela Silva, Mariana Tenreiro, Marta Maia, Mavilde Gonçalves, Nuno Ferreira, Olga Leite and Raquel Quelhas, who learn ceramics in her atelier. The group produced tiles inspired by the work of António Gedeão (1906-1997) and the poem “Aurora Boreal” (Aurora Borealis).

Commissioned from one of today's most renowned Portuguese artists - known as Vhils - the work consists of two faces sculpted using the technique of excavating concrete, which are placed side by side. This is a tribute to Teresa Gonçalves Gomes and Domingos Silva Teixeira, the couple behind the creation of dstgroup.

"Zénite" (Zenith) is an artwork, on a monumental scale (reaching 30 metres in height), which is the result of an old dream of Miguel Palma, artist, and José Teixeira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of dstgroup. The dream consisted of the integration of an aircraft in the creation of an artwork for public space. Four electricity towers, topped by small wind turbines, support the aircraft, in a project that involved working in partnership with several engineering teams from dstgroup. The work embodies the dream time (perhaps utopia) in which art, nature and technology come together in the collective construction of a world of truth, beauty and good.

In the middle of the pandemic, José Teixeira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of dstgroup, challenged the artist BEK to create a work in honour of all those who fight this scourge. The result is this piece that is installed on the dstgroup campus, next to the Health Centre, and which has as its central representation, HYGIEIA, the Greek goddess of health and hygiene.
