Braga em Obras

BeO Braga em Obras, an inventory, cataloguing and signage project of artworks in public space in the municipality of Braga, referring to the 20th and 21st centuries.
Volker Schnüttgen celebrated his 60th birthday on January 30, 2021, the same year that he marked 35 years of career, 30 of which were spent in Portugal. dstgroup and zet gallery developed a set of retrospective projects on his work. As a climax to this celebration, a work, of his authorship, consisting of three elements, was erected. The work reuses two marble columns from the demolition of a building and adds iron elements designed by the artist and produced in the factories on the campus. The symbolism of the number three, besides the immediate religious allusion, is also associated with the shape of the triangle, a symbol of the woman that the artist also makes a point of paying homage to, in the transversality of her history in time and space.

On one of the walls of the Braga bus station, we find a painting, of a crude nature that takes advantage of the organic nature of the wall itself, which seems to refer to various figures of national public life. Framed within the so-called “urban art”, the work was executed by a collective of artists who signed with pseudonyms.

Eduardo Melo Peixoto (1927-2008), known as Canon Melo, was a Priest and Dean of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Braga and the Vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Braga for over three decades, that dedicated his entire life to the Church. He became one of the personalities that stood out the most in the revolutionary period that followed April 25, 1974, leading the Catholic opposition to the left-most political sectors. The bronze statue was an initiative of a group of citizens from Braga and was designed by architect Fernando Jorge. It represents the canon in ecclesiastical robes, holding a book and a cloak on his opposite arm in one hand.

At 572 metres, Sameiro Hill is the highest point in the city of Braga, with a breath-taking view over the city, especially at sunset hours. It allows a glimpse of the Gerês, Cabreira, Penha and Franqueira Mountains and on days with better visibility, it is even possible to see the sea, from Leixões to the mouth of the Lima River.
The Sanctuary is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Sameiro (Our Lady of Sameiro) and its history dates back to 14th June 1863, when Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva, vicar of the town, began its construction, which has several phases, from the main building to the gardens and surrounding statues. Today it is the second-largest centre of Marian devotion in Portugal, and a must-see in the capital of Minho.
A considerable amount of statuary dedicated to saints, popes and other benefactors of the Church is designed by the Macao-born sculptor Raúl Maria Xavier, including the posthumous unveiling of the statue commemorating Pius XII.
