Braga em Obras

BeO Braga em Obras, an inventory, cataloguing and signage project of artworks in public space in the municipality of Braga, referring to the 20th and 21st centuries.
At 572 metres, Sameiro Hill is the highest point in the city of Braga, with a breath-taking view over the city, especially at sunset hours. It allows a glimpse of the Gerês, Cabreira, Penha and Franqueira Mountains and on days with better visibility, it is even possible to see the sea, from Leixões to the mouth of the Lima River.
The Sanctuary is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Sameiro (Our Lady of Sameiro) and its history dates back to 14th June 1863, when Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva, vicar of the town, began its construction, which has several phases, from the main building to the gardens and surrounding statues. Today it is the second-largest centre of Marian devotion in Portugal, and a must-see in the capital of Minho.
A considerable amount of statuary dedicated to saints, popes and other benefactors of the Church is designed by the Macao-born sculptor Raúl Maria Xavier, including the posthumous unveiling of the statue commemorating Pius XII.

On the steps of Sameiro, at the access to the monumental Basilica, we find two polychrome ceramic reliefs that represent the Third and Fourth Glorious Mysteries, that is, the coming of the Holy Spirit over the Apostles and the Assumption of Mary, respectively.

Clara Menéres was one of the biggest names in national sculpture after April 25th, 1974. The artist saw herself as an avant-garde, having marked several trends throughout the decades, from feminist and erotic art in the 1960s and 1970s to religious art in recent years. She worked in stone, plastic, metal, neon, and embroidery, among many other materials.
Since December 8, 2005, the day of the Immaculate Conception, that the Sanctuary of Sameiro presents these four angels, three meters high. It is a work, of contemporary apprehension, in a religious stronghold. The sculptures were conceived through a combination of traditional and innovative techniques, combining plaster and stainless steel with the geometrization of shapes, typical of contemporary art. The objective was to make a different interpretation of traditional sculpture using new technologies. It is not abandonment, but, rather, a desirable relationship between both trends. However, it is still an opening of religion to new aesthetics. The set was commissioned by Canon Melo, to mark the 150th centenary of the Immaculate Conception and, simultaneously, the centenary of the coronation of the image of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro (Our Lady of Sameiro), celebrated the previous year. The short deadlines postponed the installation to 2005. São Gabriel (Saint Gabriel), São Miguel (Saint Michael), São Rafael (Saint Raphael) and the Angel of Portugal are the four angels, sculpted in marble with steel and stainless steel wings, which symbolise the connection that exists between the angels, Nossa Senhora (Our Lady) and men.
