Braga em Obras

BeO Braga em Obras, an inventory, cataloguing and signage project of artworks in public space in the municipality of Braga, referring to the 20th and 21st centuries.
This is an initiative of the Archdiocese and the Braga City Council to honour Eugénio Giuseppe Maria Giovanni Pacelli (1876-1958), Pope Pius XII from March 2nd, 1939. He was the only Pope of the 20th century to exercise the Extraordinary Magisterium of Papal Infallibility, invoked by Pius IX when he defined the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 in his encyclical Munificentissimus Deus. His actions in World War II were the subject of debate and controversy. Nevertheless, he was proclaimed venerable by John Paul II in the 1990s. In Raúl Maria Xavier's interpretation, the bronze statue represents him in ecclesiastical robes and with open arms as a sign of welcome. It rests on a granite pedestal with an inscription.

The statue was commissioned by Archbishop Eurico Dias Nogueira (1923-2014) to honour Archbishop Francisco Maria da Siva (1910-1977) and the 54 archbishops who preceded him. The representative was archbishop from 1 December 1963 until his death. In this bronze, he appears in ecclesiastical vestments, with one hand raised as if he were saluting and, in the other, holding the crosier. It stands on a granite pedestal that includes an inscription.

Designed by the architect Luiz Cunha, the work represents a foot, made of stone, in tiptoe position, with a wing on each ankle, which rests on a pyramidal metal structure. “Pé Alado” is also the name of the building to which it is associated, which was initially designed to be a shopping centre. After some time without use, the Pé Alado Building was restructured and is now the headquarters of the Junta da União de Freguesias de São José de São Lázaro e São João de Souto.

The monument is one of the visual axes of Avenida Central and was erected to mark Pope John Paul II's visit to Braga in May 1982. It is a project by the sculptor Zulmiro de Carvalho and the architect Domingos Tavares, consisting of three pyramids and a crypt that symbolises the three sacred mounts of Braga: Bom Jesus, Sameiro e Falperra. The wall, in stone, signifies the line of sight and also includes an inscription elucidating the evocation made.

The work follows the artistic language of Moisés, with a figurative tendency and the use of different types of marble. In this case, a tree is represented with a base made of several interconnected elements, in an almost surreal way, a fluted trunk topped by pyramidal elements symbolising the branches.

The bronze bust is set in República Square, in front of the house where Maria Ondina Braga (1932-2003) was born. The writer left the city of Braga in the 1950s to study languages in Paris and London, graduating in English Literature from the Royal Asiatic Society of Arts and the Alliance Française. She worked as a teacher in Angola, Goa and Macao and simultaneously devoted herself to writing and translation. Author of titles such as "Angústia em Pequim", "A China fica ao lado" or "Nocturno em Macau", among many others, she is considered one of the great female names in contemporary Portuguese narrative. She returned to Portugal in 1964, moved to Lisbon and when she felt her life was coming to an end, she returned to Braga to die in silence and solitude. She is buried in the Monte D'Arcos Cemetery and the bust that pays tribute to her includes the inscription "...I AM A WOMAN WHO CHOSE SOLITUDE".

Created by Circus Collective, the mural painting on Raio street was commissioned by dstgroup to mark the opening of the zet gallery (formerly known as 'shair') in April 2014. The work evokes the phantasmagoric and illustrative universe of the collective, which for several years has been mostly dedicated to exploring the possibilities of graffiti.

Dedicated to the sun god, the tile panel, by the Portuguese-Angolan Francisco Vidal, was executed in March 2020 in the workshop of the artist and ceramist João Carqueijeiro (AO, 1954), in the weeks before the first general confinement, as a preventive measure against the spread of Covid-19. At the same time, the artist prepared a solo exhibition at zet gallery, having the opportunity to experience the city of Braga for several weeks. The work corresponds to this passage of time and reflects how the beginning of the pandemic turned the artist into someone much more spiritual and religious. The artwork shows the expressionist dimension of his work, of a symbolic and figurative nature, and bears the mark of his palette.
