Braga em Obras

BeO Braga em Obras, an inventory, cataloguing and signage project of artworks in public space in the municipality of Braga, referring to the 20th and 21st centuries.
In homage to the industrialist, philanthropist and patron, the bust was erected in front of the Salvador Church and the Conde Agrolongo Retirement Home, works funded by José Francisco Correia (1853-1929). Born in Guimarães, he was an emigrant in Brazil and on his return supported and founded schools, churches, asylums and other charitable works, a practice common to the "torna-viagens" (having moved from one country to another, returns to the country of origin) who became rich in Terras de Vera Cruz between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was awarded several commendations, including the Cross of Industrial Merit (by D. Carlos), the rank of Knight of St. Gregory the Great (by Pope Leo XIII), the titles of Viscount of Sande and Count of Agrolongo.

The monument was offered by the social bodies of Misericórdia de Braga as a tribute to all those who have contributed to the institution's cause throughout its 500 years. The rectangular panel, in bronze, presents, in high relief, several sculpted hands that symbolise the requests for help and the given help, the mission of all the Misericórdias. It contains inscriptions that testify to the gesture and is set on a granite base.

Tribute to Salgado Zenha (1923-1993) from Braga, inaugurated to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Revolution of 25th of April 1974. The lawyer and politician Francisco de Almeida Salgado Zenha was part of the restricted group of lawyers who stood out in the defence of political prisoners and for their participation in subversive activities during the Estado Novo. In the post-Revolutionary period, he became a leading figure in the democratisation process. He was Minister of Justice in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Provisional Governments.
The monument is inspired by the shape of a silo, evoking the idea of a reservoir and a place for storing memory. The 40 panels, in stainless steel, symbolise the 40 years of the Carnation Revolution and each ring is arranged in 25 elements that suggest the idea of a book or document, sources of information and archive. The work is 4 metres in diameter and 8 metres high and is supported by an inner structure of vertical props, braced by rings.

During the Age of Discoveries, Diogo Cão (c.1440-1486), navigator and squire to King João II, set the first Padrões (stone pillars), in 1482, in Africa. The Padrões were made of stone, in a columnar composition with the sculpted Portuguese weapons, and were intended to assert the Portuguese sovereignty in a certain conquered place. These sculptural elements in granite and with the cross in bronze, reproduce, generically, the originals. On one of the faces of the capital bears the inscription „E SE MAIS HOUVERA, LÁ CHEGARA, LUSÍADAS“, corresponding to Canto VII, Stanza 14, Verse 8 of the Lusíadas by Luís Vaz de Camões.

The building of the Pópulo Convent, headquarters of Braga City Hall, hosts a work by Pedro Figueiredo, a sculptor with a surreal language that praises women and the poetry of the semiotics of the body. In "A Viagem" (the journey) there is a narrative suggestion in which the presence is as important as the absence of matter, the relationship with architecture and the power of imagination. With a strong presence in the national and international public space, the artist has, over the last few years, inscribed his forms in the Minho landscape.
The work was ceded by dstgroup and zet gallery to Braga City Council.

The present monument started by winning a public competition, promoted by Braga City Hall, in 1989. However, the work would only be inaugurated in 2002, thanks to the contribution of Monsignor Eduardo Melo Peixoto. Designed by the sculptor José Pacheco and the architect Ramalhete Barbosa, the set includes a bronze structure where the archbishops are represented, symbolising the holders of the office throughout history. There is also an Episcopal cross, in iron, six metres high and, on the side, a bronze female figure, which is an allegorical image of the city of Braga. On the sidewall, in an "L" shape, are the 17 coats of arms of the municipalities that make up the Archdiocese.

It is a monument that evokes the religious and secular personality of D. Diogo de Sousa (c.1461-1532) who, through his "visionary door", opened Braga to the world. D. Diogo de Sousa rejuvenated the city urbanistically and this "door" represents the strategic vision that is still his identity today. The door also symbolises the difference that each one of us can make when passing through a certain place, taking as inspiration the figure of the archbishop of the Renaissance in Braga. The monument is 7x2x0.2 meters and is characterized by a metallic structure lined with bronze sheeting.

The canon José Narciso da Costa Rebelo and Joaquim José da Costa Rebelo, Baron of Gramosa, were the project's promoters. It was intended to honour D. Pedro V (1837-1861), beloved monarch of the people and who had the nicknames of "The Hopeful" and "the Much Beloved". It was designed by Teixeira Lopes (father), in granite, and represents the king in military uniform, with a band and insignia, on a granite pedestal, surrounded by a flight of stairs with four steps where the royal coat-of-arms and an inscription are displayed.
