The art of Zélia Mendonça derives from the new trend that, in the last decades, marked contemporary art, both for the audacity and sometimes for the negation of the true aesthetic creation.
Zélia Mendonça's works make use of objects such as busts, chairs, lamps, she transfigures them, creating fascinating things, even if they originate from our daily lives. In fact, the fascination comes from this transfiguration.
It is, therefore, from this clash, from the banal to the dreamlike, that the charm of the works that she invents is born. This invention - or reinvention - of either a female torso or a simple chair - is due to the profusion of colors and unusual elements that she uses to cover them and drag us into the dream.
These works sometimes evoke the scenarios of a kind of surreal theater and, at the same time, seem impregnated with the magic proper to the rituals of black Brazilian culture. It is, therefore, a mixture of sophisticated and popular.
