Weekend suggestion – Goya: The Portraits at the National Gallery

Until January 10th, 2016 the National Gallery hosts the exhibition Goya: The Portraits, presenting 70 of the artist’s most outstanding artworks from public and private collections around the world.

It is often said that Goya is the last of the old masters and first of the moderns, but Francisco de Goya wasn’t the same kind of painter all of the time, or even within one painting. Goya: The Portraits includes pieces from his first commissions, only achieved when he was 37, to later and more intimate works, from the time he was exiled in France. The show includes Goya’s paintings and drawings of the most important figures of his times, like royals, aristocrats,  politicians, musicians, military figures and intellectuals never seen before in London.
