Lisbon-born Sónia Aniceto graduated with an honors degree in painting and tapestry at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Lisbon. After an Erasmus scholarship, art residences and a post-graduation at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels, she kept living in Belgium. Her artistic career is developed into collaborations with several galleries in Europe and USA.
Sonia Aniceto seeks to eliminate the boundaries between painting and fiber art. The thread is the element that makes a link between different narrative layers and it appears as a need for reconstitution. Facing unlikely places, decontextualized stories and characters between human and puppet, the viewer seeks his place between past and present, fiction and reality. Spatial and temporal references are mixing up. A whirling, textile sky reminds us of human conflicts and eternal, unresolved questions. Female bodies (both battlefield and playground) torn by emotions evoque sensuality, introspection and the eternal quest for identity.
