The visual world has underlying structures and patterns that combine to give us a perception of reality. His art seeks to reflect the connections and layers.
Much of David Barnes' work involves creating a collage. The act of cutting through a sheet of material reveals a window to another layer underneath. His work tries to create a sense of surface pattern, letting the eye wander across the picture plane, as well as creating a sense of depth and space receding behind the surface.
